Meghalaya: Introduction

I live in state of Meghalaya, India in the capital city Shillong. I created this blog  because I have noticed that people especially students living in Meghalaya are at a loss and are extremely confused on a number of issues. I hope to clarify some of the confusion with the help of this blog.

I will give tips on quite a few things that pop into my head and hope this blog will be of assistance to those seeking help.

A brief intro into Meghalaya, the population is quite small and most of it is centered around Shillong. 70% plus of the population are Christians with a very puritanical views which affects the more progressive minded of the state. I wish to address those issues so as to help my fellow citizens navigate their way through life.

Meghalaya is dirt poor overall. The state can barely pay its debts and is heavily reliant on Central government funding while at the same time it tries to claim more autonomy from India on internal governance matters. The irony is lost among the people here. That is not to say it lacks revenue, just that the revenue collected from the people somehow disappears into the nightmare that is the bureaucracy. Racism is highly prevalent coupled with Christian Moral Panics over alleged Satanism. Though they do exist they are all mostly parodists trying to rile up and prank the gullible. Apparently witchcraft is a crime guilty of either lynching and or if lucky banishment.

If this description does give appearance that Meghalaya is occupied by crazy, superstitious, religious fundamentalists, then it is intentional. But never fear the city of Shillong contains some of the best educational centers in the entire of North East India. The people in the city especially the city center are affluent, highly educated and quite out of touch with reality. The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is one of the best universities in India and many colleges under it have received high accreditation by the University Grants Commission(UGC). A lot of people come to Shillong to study, whether in colleges or schools. Thus most of the people under 25 of the state tend to be more liberal and progressive, which clashes against the religious fundamentalists (Mainly men) who rule the state.  Thus for visitors, don't talk to the oldies listen to the younger people, the conversation maybe a little raw but they make better conversationalists than the oldies.
